Wrapping Up One Odd TV Show Of A Year

A year that seemed like horror, but was perhaps more dark comedy

I want to think that at least 97% of the planet was somewhat optimistic heading into 2021 on New Year’s Eve.

We weren’t optimistic because of any one thing – we were optimistic because 2020 had been such a colossal dumpster fire that we believed there was NO WAY 2021 could be worse.

Well. When you approach this outgoing year like a TV show, you can see that the writers clearly had a “hold my beer” moment.

Inflation absolutely torpedoing the Nigerian economy to new depths even memes from a year ago hadn’t anticipated? Check.

The Nigerian Government boldly encroaching on our digital rights and shutting down access to social media? Check.

You liked variants in the Loki TV show? Well how about even MORE variants of good old COVID to keep you all on your toes? Check.

People who you previously thought were smart, coming up with reasons not to take the vaccine – and then proceeding to fall deathly ill from the virus? Check.

Losing loved ones to random illnesses, accidents and ‘acts of God’? Check.

The planet continuing to simultaneously catch fire on one side and flood on the other as Global Warming is still being gaslighted as fiction? Check.

And I’m not even scratching the surface here.

The writers of 2021 threw everything and the kitchen sink at this season. There were multiple plot holes and loose ends, but I don’t think they cared much for plot. Just shock and awe.

On a personal level though? 2021 helped me. A lot. I even got a new motto out of it:

You’re really only scared of a thing before it happens.

Business wise our biggest fear was not hitting our financial targets.

We didn’t hit our targets.

My other big fear was getting sick.

I fell terribly ill in August.

I worried what would happen if some of my personal investments fell through.

Quite a few of them did, infact, fall through.

Fear is a funny thing because it is mostly all anticipation. “What if’s”, raised to the power of infinity. But when you dread something happening and it does happen…that’s it. It’s no longer a fear. It’s now just a situation you have to deal with. You can either get paralysed by what just happened or you can choose to go “Well okay. That happened. Let’s do something about it.”

I liked 2021, for all its bogus plot points. The people I care about had amazing wins. I made a TON of new friends that taught me so much and have helped fortify me, in different ways. I had amazing health and fitness achievements. I made money. Up In The Sky has finally become way more popular than I probably ever will be, actually becoming a brand on its own.

And most importantly of all, I’m still here, still alive to be able to look back and take in all I’ve learnt.

That used to be stuff I took for granted. I think since 2020, we don’t do that anymore.

So as the sun sets on a hell of a year and I approach my bi-annual social media sabbatical, I hope the year was good for you too, and your hopes and dreams came to pass.

And while I can’t guarantee that the writers of 2022 won’t be any less eccentric, I am positive you, the main character in your story, will always make it.

Happy New Year in advance, people.
