We all know everyone’s fighting for attention these days. After almost two decades in the marketing business, I can tell you that cutting through the noise is harder than ever.

That’s why I’m obsessed with the micro-hook. But what is it?

A micro-hook is like a first impression. You’ve got seconds to make people curious about your post, article, or product. A killer micro-hook is that snappy opener that makes them think, “Hold up, I need to know more!”

But here’s where many people stumble: They focus on features, not benefits. When you ask yourself, “What’s the ONE thing your reader truly cares about?” That solution, the outcome, the CHANGE you’re promising them? THAT’S your hook.

Here’s an everyday example:

Boring: “Our newsletter teaches you about marketing”

Eye-Catching: “Get the insider marketing tips big brands don’t want you to know”

Want to really lock this thinking in? Use the ‘anti-hook’ checklist:

Too vague: “Improve your marketing results” (How? Be specific!)
